Rio Ferdinand believes that it will be Manchester United’s desperation to end their trophy drought that will carry them over the line to win the Carabao Cup this season.

United take on Newcastle this Sunday in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley and United legend Rio Ferdinand has had his say on the game, as he believes United will finally end their six-year trophy drought.

“I think there’s a desperation within the walls of Carrington and Old Trafford to get this trophy because this will signify a lot, it will be a big point in the right direction for the manager,” he said.

“What he’s trying to implement is right, is justified with a lot of what he’s putting into this team on the training pitch.

“We won against Leicester, we’ll beat Newcastle and I think we’ll beat Barca as well. We’ll go through against Barcelona, and I think we’ll win the game against Newcastle.”

Before they play the Cup final this weekend, United will first have to navigate their way through a second leg Europa League clash against Barcelona. The game is all tied up after the first leg, as the teams played out a thriller in the Nou Camp that ended 2-2.

Ferdinand added that it’s key to not forget the importance of the Carabao Cup, saying he thinks that it’s mad that players don’t celebrate the trophy.

“When we used to play and we won the Carabao Cup, there was no celebration,” he continued. “It’s mad. I understand the enormity of this game for Man Utd because it’s a sign of the times.”

If United are able to win on Sunday, it would put an end to the clubs longest trophy drought in over 40 years and bring silverware back to Old Trafford for the first time since 2017.
