Fresh reports coming out of the French capital this morning suggest Lionel Messi’s career at PSG could be short-lived, with the two parties so far failing to make any inroads over a possible contract extension. In light of this latest development, we are looking at how likely a dream return to Barcelona could be this summer in the latest Lionel Messi next club odds market.

According to French newspaper La Parisien, contract talks over a new deal have suffered from a complete breakdown recently, indicating that Lionel Messi’s exit from the club could come sooner rather than later.

After being forced out of Barcelona two years ago, the recent World Cup winner had to uproot his entire life and leave the place he had called home for over two decades since leaving his native Argentina aged 13.

This included moving his wife and three children to a new city in one of the most shocking turnarounds ever seen in the transfer window, particularly after both Messi and the club had announced he would be staying the evening before his departure.

It does appear the economic constraints placed on Barcelona by La Liga could make this fairytale reunion increasingly unlikely, with the league leaders even battling to push through new deals for existing players such as Marcos Alonso and Gavi.

Gerrard Romero, who is a high-profile reporter with a working relationship at the Now Camp, recently confirmed that the Blaugrana has submitted a thorough economic re-structuring plan in order to facilitate Messi’s return. He also went on to say that although the league had some resistance to some of the finer details, an agreement is believed to already be in place.

The player himself is willing to take a significant pay cut to return to Catalonia, but club president Joan Laporta and the rest of the hierarchy will need to prove their affordability once again to La Liga, who have taken a zero tolerance stance in recent seasons to help protect the integrity and identity of the league.
