Chelsea captain Reece James has been charged by the FA for ‘using abusive language towards a match official’ following an incident in the tunnel after his side’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old has been charged by the FA with a breach of rule E3 following Sunday’s defeat, where it’s alleged he used abusive language towards a match official in the tunnel following the full-time whistle at Stamford Bridge.

James is in the midst of yet another spell on the sidelines with injury and has not played for Mauricio Pochettino’s side since the opening day draw with Liverpool in August due to a hamstring problem.

He was named club captain by Pochettino during the summer but fellow countrymen Ben Chilwell and Conor Gallagher have stepped up in his place to lead the Blues out wearing the armband.

Last week he took to his Instagram story to post a picture of him on an exercise bike, suggesting a return is only around the corner to help a depleted Chelsea side who are winless in September without scoring a goal.

James has struggled with fitness since breaking through to the Chelsea first-team four years ago. He missed 20 games during the 2021/22 campaign and an additional 25 last season, with knee and hamstring issues plaguing his early career.

He is now facing a ban which will only further pile the pressure upon Pochettino, who is already missing the likes of Wesley Fofana, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia and Armando Broja from the squad.

Chelsea can score their first goal of the month and get a badly-needed win on the board in the third round of the EFL Cup against Brighton tonight.
