SEDGEFIELD 1.00
MAJOR SNUGFIT (system – top 4 from the front over 1m2f+ on Newcastle’s AW last time out)
It’s never been easy to win from the front on the round course at Newcastle (all-weather) and simply backing any pacesetter who made the top four over 1m2f or further last-time out would have found 51 winners from 234 bets (21.8% strike-rate) for a profit of £91.20 to the usual £1 stake.
MAJOR SNUGFIT got into a battle for the early lead when fourth of 13 in a 1m4f Newcastle handicap last time, seeing off the other pace horses but getting passed by three hold-up horses late on. He had three lengths to spare over the other frontrunner and will appreciate the return to hurdles -his last three wins having come in this sphere.
SOUTHWELL 3.01
TEN PAST MIDNIGHT (system – Martin Keighley, Southwell jumps)
Martin Keighley is 38 from 213 (18.8% strike-rate) in national hunt races at Southwell and backing them blind would have returned a profit of ÂŁ51.12 to a ÂŁ1 level stake at SP. In handicap chases only his strike-rate improves to 27.5% (14 winners from 51 runners) for a profit of ÂŁ58.16. TEN PAST MIDNIGHT, a dual course winner over hurdles at the Nottinghamshire venue, can make a winning chase debut.
AYR 4.39
POSITIVE FORCE (system – Kevin Ryan/Kevin Stott, first-time cheekpieces, handicaps)
Since the beginning of 2010, Kevin Ryan’s record with handicappers in first-time cheekpieces stands at 23 winners from 243 qualifiers (9.5%) for a loss of £22.09. However, the ones ridden by Kevin Stott are ten from 42 for a profit of £51.33 and it could be worth chancing outsider POSITIVE FORCE to make an impact in the first-time headgear. The three-year-old might be in receipt of an easy lead in this 1m2f handicap and the form of Thirsk’s June third to Bay Of Honour and Positive Impact – now rated 102 and 94 respectively – suggests his mark of 72 could be on the generous side.
