Mick Appleby has a fantastic record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other trainers, scoring with 95 of the 527 qualifiers (18% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £327.90 to a £1 level stake at SP. He’s six from 13 on this angle in 2023 (+£27.48) and SECRETARY, a 66-1 winner art Chelmsford in December on his final outing for Henry Spiller, can keep the ball rolling despite a tough draw in stall 1.
LUDLOW 1.50
BALLINGERS CORNER (system – Venetia Williams, first run after a wind operation, handicaps)
Venetia Williams has a 14 from 43 record with her handicappers who were having their first start after wind surgery and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £61.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who were returning from a break of at least 150 days were 12 from 30 for a profit of £67.08. BALLINGERS CORNER could be worth chancing on his stable debut, despite the 678-day absence.
NEWCASTLE 2.00
BUXTED TOO (system – Ian Williams, handicappers in March)
Since the beginning of 2010, Ian Williams has a 68 from 370 record in handicaps during the month of March (18.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £70.64 to a £1 level stake at SP. Ignoring the handicap hurdlers would have increased the profit to £87.99. BUXTED TOO, bidding for a five-timer, can get the yard off to a flyer this month.
CHELMSFORD 5.15
SITHCHEAN (system – Charlie Appleby, gelded 3yo newcomers)
Since the beginning of 2017, trainer Charlie Appleby has a 19 from 60 record with gelded three-year-old newcomers (31.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £23.54 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those ridden by apprentice jockeys have an even higher strike-rate and Harry Davies can guide Dark Angel filly SITHCHEAN to victory on her debut.
