NEWMARKET 2.25
JOYFUL ACT (system – top four from the front on Newcastle’s round course LTO)
It remains difficult to win from the front on the round course on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface (distances of 1m2f or further) and those horses who finish in the top four under a forcing rode often make good bets next time out. Had we backed all 270 qualifiers we’d have hit 55 winners and made a profit of £80.85 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 41.2). Charlie Appleby’s 5-2 shot JOYFUL ACT made all to deny shorter-priced stablemate Sahara Mist in a 1m2f fillies’ maiden at Newcastle last month and can make a winning turf debut.
NEWMARKET 4.50
HECTIC (system – Richard Hannon, second run since gelded)
In the past five years Richard Hannon has a 22 from 95 record with runners having their second start since gelded and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £54.20 to a £1 level stake at SP. HECTIC finished a solid second in a 7f Newbury handicap on very soft ground on last month’s reappearance and can go one better this afternoon.
HAMILTON 4.58
SLAINTE MHATH (system – Hamilton, 6f, low draw)
The perception among many punters and pundits is that the stands’ rail (high draws) is favoured in 6f races at Hamilton but that is not the case. Since the start of last year, those who raced centre to far side from their low draws have fared best and backing all runners drawn 1, 2 or 3 would have found 22 winners from 99 bets for a huge profit of £245.24 to the usual £1 stake. SLAINTE MHATH looks best of the low-drawn trio in this 6f handicap.
