The curiously-named KNACKER TRAPPER was beaten by 28 lengths at Catterick on his latest outing but Andrew Crook’s five-year-old started at 100-1 for that 2m3.5f Class 4 novices’ hurdle and the race is starting to work out well, with the first three home all scoring at the next time of asking and the 125-1 seventh catching the eye in mid-division when returned to Catterick for a similar event on his next outing, his third run for a handicap mark. Knacker Trapper has been given a mark of just 93 for this handicap debut, looks sure to be suited by the step up to 3m/drop to Class 5 level and can be bought in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or backed each-way with Spreadex. I’ve saved on CLOVIS BAY, who won in a fast time at Hexham and looks open to improvement over today’s longer trip.

In the past ten years, 79 horses have carried 10st 11lb or more in the Coral Welsh Grand National and only two proved successful – subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Native River in 2016 and stablemate Elegant Escape two years later. The expected number of winners based on their odds was 5.07 and, even though the ground is faster than usual (good to soft, with rain forecast), it could still pay to side with those lower down the weights. I’m particularly keen on the claims of SUPER SURVIVOR, number 12 on the racecard, as well as number 15 WAYFINDER, and a buy of DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER with Spreadex looks to be the call.
