Ted Walsh’s six-year-old returns to fences today, having failed to shine in this sphere in three runs last year, finishing third, ninth and seventh by a combined margin of more than 126 lengths. The ground is going to be desperate on the hurdles course at Lingfield today and, with four regular pacesetters among the 14 runners for this 2m7f Class 3 handicap hurdle, it’s set to be a real war of attrition. What’s key to success in hurdle races at Lingfield on this sort of going is to challenge wide on what is usually better ground and I’m looking to play the hold-up horses rather than the front-runners, as the pace horses naturally migrate to the ‘swamp’ on the inside.
I’m going to chance one at big odds, and that’s LYNWOOD GOLD for Brian Barr. This seven-year-old had plenty of form on this sort of ground in Ireland and didn’t shape without promise when a 100-1 seventh of eight on last month’s stable debut.
The Barr yard narrowly failed to land a gamble with Begin The Luck (3-1f from 20-1) at Exeter last Friday and, this year, they are two from four at the second time of asking with stable switchers (wins at 18-1 and 5-1, beaten horses were fourth at 8-1 and sixth at 33-1). Buy in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or back each-way.
