PORT RASHID
Timothy Townend’s 12-year-old PORT RASHID won over course and distance last time but that was in a ladies handicap hurdle in which the prominent racers went off hard and helped to set the race up for the closers, with the winner, third, fourth, fifth and sixth all coming from midfield or further back. It looked like they were flattered and I expect Port Rashid to struggle today. Sell in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market. Fixed odds punters might want to side with DYLAN LOMBARDY, best of those ridden up with the pace when just behind Port Rashid over course and distance last month.
Recommendation: Oppose PORT RASHID in Thurles 3.40
WINCANTON 5.00
BENTLEY’S RETURN
In the past ten years, in-form Chris Gordon is 18 from 102 with his runners at Wincanton and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £46.33 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners only 10.85). He landed the concluding bumper with 14-1 shot Smurphy Enki in 2020 and BENTLEY’S RETURN might be able to follow on his footsteps. The five-year-old shaped with promise on his debut at Fontwell last October, running green before staying on well into fifth place. That form has received a few boosts with the winner and third scoring at least once each over hurdles and the runner-up going down by a short head in the same sphere. Bentley’s Return ran here at Wincanton on Boxing Day on his next start, again showing plenty of ability by finishing a 28-1 fourth of 17. The runner-up and third from that contest – Beat The Bat and Choccabloc – ran one-two at Chepstow next time and the form looks solid. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or back him each-way in the fixed odds betting.
