This 3m2.5f handicap chase has been known to throw up a shock result or two over the years and recent form rarely comes to the fore. Tour Des Champs was successful at 50-1 in 2017 and Mon Parrain did the business at 25-1 two years earlier. In the past ten years (only eight renewals because of abandonments), horses who ran first, second or third in their prep race are just one from 31 for a loss of £23.00 to a £1 level stake at SP, suggesting that we should look beyond the obvious. Had we simply bet all runners who finished fourth or worse in a Class 1 contest last-time out would have found six winners from 26 bets for a profit of £68.88 to a £1 level stake at SP. This angle has thrown up six of the past seven winners and also produced the 33-1 third from three qualifiers in the only blank year (2020). THE WOLF, FOUND ON, SWITCH HITTER and MINELLA BOBO all qualify on this angle and the best way to side with them is to buy SP OF WINNER with Spreadex.

MUSSELBURGH 1.35
Top weight MINELLA DRAMA has often underperformed on right-handed tracks and Donald McCain’s eight-year-old, the 4-1 second favourite at the time of writing, can be opposed. He won a weak race this way round (at Market Rasen) in February 2021 but has been beaten at evens, 6-1, 7-4 and 11-4 in his four subsequent right-handed starts. Sell in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market. HALF SHOT, two from two right-handed for Iain Jardine, might be the best option for fixed odds punters.

CATTERICK 3.00
CAITLIN won well at Newcastle, her favourite venue, on her penultimate outing but was 18 lengths back in fourth at Southwell next time and looks worth opposing again. Her record at Newcastle reads 111 (3-3) but she’s 0-23 elsewhere. Sell in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market. Sue Smith has a great record in the month of January, especially at Catterick, and her ABSOLUTELY DYLAN could be worth a small each-way play in the Spreadex fixed odds market.
