HAYDOCK 2.40
SNOW LEOPARDESS (system – Charlie Longsdon, chasers in first-time cheekpieces)
I can make a case for several runners in Haydock’s Grand National Trial Handicap but the one I’m going to chance to small stakes is Charlie Longsdon’s SNOW LEOPARDESS. The veteran mare has taken time to find her form since pulling up in last season’s Grand National but showed a little more when sixth of 15 in a cross country race at Cheltenham last time. The cheekpieces go on today and that’s a positive statistical angle where her trainer’s chasers are concerned, with 18 of the 72 qualifiers winning for a profit of £30.60 to a £1 level stake at SP.
HAYDOCK 3.50
MAYPOLE CLASS (system – Gold Well, handicap chases, first run after a wind operation)
Progeny of sire Gold Well often improve for a wind operation, with the handicap chasers landing five of their 23 starts for a profit of ÂŁ14.40 to a ÂŁ1 level stake at SP. MAYPOLE CLASS pulled up here in December on his most recent outing but could be worth chancing on his first start following the wind operation.
WINCANTON 5.20
DE WANTED WARRIOR (system – Paul Nicholls, handicap hurdle debutants in first-time tongue-tie)
In recent year Paul Nicholls has an eight from 21 record when fitting a handicap hurdle debutant with a first-time tongue-tie for a profit of ÂŁ41.50 to a ÂŁ1 level stake at SP. DE WANTED WARRIOR finished well beaten in a course and distance novice hurdle last time out but looks a likely improver now handicapping in the headgear.
NEWCASTLE 7.00
LION’S DREAM (system – Mick Appleby, stable switchers)
Mick Appleby has a fantastic record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other trainers, scoring with 92 of the 521 qualifiers (17.7% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £319.15 to a £1 level stake at SP. LION’S DREAM, tried over 1m-1m4f when with Richard Hughes, looks very interesting on his first attempt at 7f and was well supported when the betting first opened.
NEWCASTLE 8.00
MOPS GEMS (system – Andrew Mullen, big-field straight course handicaps at Newcastle)
Andrew Mullen rides the straight course (races over 5f-1m) at Newcastle especially well – he’s aware of the need to get cover, conserve energy and come with a late run. This winter (from October 1st, 2022) had we sided with his mounts in handicaps of ten or more runners we’d have wo eight of our 26 bets and made a profit of £63.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. MOPS GEMS fared second best of those ridden patiently when a 14-1 fifth of 12 at Southwell last time and a similar ride could see her in the frame here.
