PLUMPTON 1.45

ATAKAN (system – chase debutants, top weight in handicaps)

Backing chase debutants who go straight into handicaps under top weight rather than take the beginners/novice chase route is a profitable angle and Joe Tizzard’s ATAKAN looks interesting now switching to the larger obstacles under the welter burden of 12-02. He ran with credit on his debut last term and his best RPR (Racing Post Rating) came at today’s venue when second at 9-1 in a handicap hurdle.

PLUMPTON 2.55

COUNTERACT (system – Dr Massini, handicap chases, 8yo or younger)

It’s possible that COUNTERACT is going to prove best in the spring – his two wins came at Wincanton in late March and over today’s course and distance in mid-April – but he’s a qualifier on a strong breeding angle and he might be worth a small interest at a big price (forecast at 14-1).

Youthful progeny (aged eight or younger) of the sire Dr Massini have a cracking record in handicap chases in Britain and Ireland, landing 124 of their 729 starts (17% strike-rate) for a profit of £130.07 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners less than 88). Counteract was well beaten at Stratford last time but probably needed the run after six months off and his patient running style was not ideal for that venue.

HEREFORD 3.10

STROLL ON BY (system – Charlie Longsdon, first-time cheekpieces)

Charlie Longsdon has a solid record when fitting one of his runners with cheekpieces for the first time, scoring with 30 of the 156 qualifiers since 2011 (19.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £31.33. The hurdlers don’t do as well as the chasers but STROLL ON BY should improve for last month’s runner-up effort at Bangor on his hurdling debut. He’s also had a wind operation since that outing and should be an each-way price.
