DANGER ALERT (system – first-time blinkers, ridden by William Buick last time out)
Several trainers/owners I’ve spoken to agree that William Buick gives great feedback after riding for them. Horses who were ridden by Buick on their latest runs, without headgear, who now rock up in first-time headgear are profitable to follow. Since the beginning of 2010, 58 of the 322 qualifiers win (18% strike-rate) and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £80.78 to a £1 level stake at SP. DANGER ALERT, a respectable 10-1 fourth of eight under Buick in a 6f novice contest here in early December, drops back to 5f in first-time blinkers and could be hard to beat. His last run at this trip – in a first-time hood – resulted in an eyecatching second at Sandown for his previous yard last summer.
WOLVERHAMPTON 7.30
TOOPHAN (system = Cole yard, beaten in first-time cheekpieces on latest start)
Since the beginning of 2016, Paul & Oliver Cole-trained runners are just four from 50 when wearing first-time cheekpieces but the beaten horses often make good bets next time out. Ten of the 43 qualifiers were successful at the next time of asking (23.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £66.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. The majority of the winners came on turf, but I still want to side with TOOPHAN in this 9.4f handicap. He found only subsequent dual winner Asdaa too good at Newcastle last time and tonight’s track should suit.
