THE ANGELUS BELLE (system – David O’Meara, first-time cheekpieces, all-weather handicaps)
At first glance THE ANGELUS BELLE, who beat only one home at Southwell on her latest start, doesn’t look to have obvious claims in this 1m handicap. However, she has performed with credit in both previous runs at Newcastle and the return to this straight track will suit. It’s interesting to see the cheekpieces go on for the first time, as David O’Meara is eight from 38 when using this form of headgear in all-weather handicaps for a profit of £31.42 to a £1 level stake at SP. She’s a big price but looks worth chancing to very small stakes.
NEWCASTLE 5.15
POWER OF STATES (system – Mick Appleby, stable switchers)
Mick Appleby has a superb record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, with Thursday’s 16-1 Newcastle winner making it 91 winners from 517 bets (18% strike-rate) for a profit of £315.15 to a £1 level stake at SP. POWER OF STATES was a prolific all-weather winner for Hugo Palmer and can make a winning start for new connections.
NEWCASTLE 6.15
AFTER JOHN (system – last-time-out Newcastle sprint handicap winners)
Horses who won a sprint (5f-6f) handicap at Newcastle (all-weather) on their latest outing have a good record when bidding to follow up, landing 118 of their 605 starts (19.5% strike-rate). We’d make a small loss by backing them blind but only siding with those who were ranked first or second using Proform’s last-time out speed figures would have shown a profit of £50.00 to a £1 level stake at SP thanks to 75 winners from 280 bets (26.8%). AFTER JOHN completed a hat-trick of 6f Newcastle wins when coming from midfield to score on December 28th and, with a headwind forecast, those tactics can help him to record a four-timer.
