Rachael Blackmore Has Four Rides On Day 2 At The Punchestown Festival
After a decent showing at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and Grand National Festival at Aintree. Blackmore is widely regarded as one of the world’s best jockeys and will be hopeful of a few winners this week at Punchestown.
On Day 2, Rachael Blackmore has four rides on Wednesday 26th April. These mounts include Envoi Allen, who is the third favourite in the Punchestown Gold Cup. Blackmore, who won the 2021 Grand National with Minella Times, also has three other rides along with Envoi Allen on Day 1 at Punchestown.
She’s also got Tag Man for trainer Henry De Bromhead in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle (4.45pm), Senior Chief in the opener (4.15pm) and Harry Des Ongrais in the Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle (5.20pm).
What Horses Is Rachael Blackmore Riding On Day 2 Of The 2023 Punchestown Festival?
Wednesday 26th April 2023
SENIOR CHIEF (Connolly’s Red Mills Irish EBF Auction Hurdle Series Final – 4.15pm): @Â 11/4 with 10Bet
This Henry De Bromhead runner is likely to be Rachael Blackmore’s shortest-priced runner on the second day of the Punchestown Festival.
The 6 year-old heads here having won 2 of his 3 career starts over hurdles – including his last two at Navan and Punchestown – and looks an improving horse.
He’s, therefore, a proven course and distance winner at the track and that experience will be a big plus in a race that lacks depth and seems to be between the Blackmore ride, Sandor Clegane, Three Card Brag and Nucky Johnson.
Blackmore told her Betfair blog followers “He remains lightly raced, I think that he is an improving horse, and he’s a lovely ride to have in this race”
TAG MAN (Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle – 4.45pm): @ 5/1 with 10Bet
Blackmore’s second ride on Day 2 of the Punchestown Festival sees the jockey ride Tag Man. This is another for her boss Henry De Bromhead and was last seen running third back at the end of January at Fairyhouse to Found A Fifty. While before that ran the useful Good Land to second at Leopardstown.
He’s been freshened up since with this race in mind as he was also a winner at this meeting last year when taking a NH Flat race. Blackmore also feels the drop back in trip will be a plus.
Blackmore told Betfair – “He was beaten last time at Fairyhouse over two miles, but he should appreciate the return to two and a half here, and a reproduction of his Leopardstown run would give him a good chance”.
HARRY DES ONGRAIS (Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle – 5.20pm): @ 25/1 with 10Bet
Third ride on the day for Blackmore is another for Henry De Bromhead, who won this race in 2019 with their former Gold Cup winner Minella Indo. This 6 year-old should strip a lot fitter for a return run after 3 1/2 months off earlier this month (5th of 12).
Blackmore thinks the more rain the better for this horse.
He also ran third in a Grade 2 Novice Hurdle at Limerick last season, but you feel most of the runners will have their work cut out here to topple the Willie Mullins runner Gaelic Warrior, who was last seen running second in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Plus, trainer Willie Mullins has won 5 of the last 7 runnings.
ENVOI ALLEN (Punchestown Gold Cup – 5.55pm): @ 12/1 with 10Bet
It’s all about Galopin Des Champs in the Punchestown Gold Cup but Rachael Blackmore will be trying to upset the odds with Envoi Allen – the biggest name of her day two rides at the Festival.
We last saw Envoi Allen beating Shishkin in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and the form of that run has been franked with the runner-up winning since at Aintree. He’s back up in trip here to 3m, which should be fine having won the Ladbrokes Champion Chase over this trip in November.
However, he’s also rated 164 now and that’s a massive 16lbs lower than Galopin Des Champs and 8lbs inferior to Bravemansgame, so might be playing for places here unless something happens to the main two players in the race.
Balckmore told her Betfair followers “Envoi Allen has come out of Cheltenham really well, and he goes there with a real chance. He’s obviously a horse who has lots of ability, and I don’t think that anyone would be surprised if he runs a big race here. Three miles at Punchestown should suit him well, and I am really looking forward to riding him.”
