Jockey Rachael Blackmore has been slapped with a five-day ban by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), following an investigation into her ride on Lady Rita at Kilbeggan earlier this month.

The 33-year-old appeared to ride a finish a circuit too soon aboard Louise Lyons’ seven-year-old mare Lady Rita, who was backed into 8/1 from 25/1 before post time.

Blackmore was called into the stewards’ room afterwards, where she offered an explanation – stating that Lady Rita had a tendency to run inconsistently and was running over a longer trip for the first time.

She claimed that she wanted to ensure that the race was run at a strong gallop and let the horse stride on after the final hurdle with a circuit to go.

Stewards informed Blackmore they were not entirely convinced by the explanation but at the time could not be certain that any alleged misjudgement had caused her to fail to obtain her best possible placing – taking no further action.

A day later, the IHRB announced the beginning of a full investigation which came to a conclusion on Wednesday morning.

Blackmore was found in breach of Rule 212A(iv), stating:

“Any rider who fails to obtain their best possible placing as a result of negligent misjudgement (including a misjudgement of the winning post or the number of circuits, easing their mount without good reason or stopping riding) shall be guilty of an offence under this sub-rule.”
