2022 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes: The Trends To Look For
Saturday’s Group One QEII Stakes carries a top prize of £655,709 and is one of four Group One races on QIPCO Champions Day this Saturday at Ascot.
12 months ago, we saw the classy Baaeed put Palace Pier in his place (watch below) and this year we’ve another superstar horse strutting their stuff in the shape of INSPIRAL @ 5/4 with 888Sport.
Trained by John and Thady Gosden, this 3 year-old Frankel filly has won 6 of her 7 career starts and is taking on the boys this Saturday getting 3lbs and 6lbs off them.
We’ll also see the 2020 winner of the race The Revenant, who is making the trip over from France to see if he can win back his QEII crown at the age of 7.
So, with the excitement building ahead of Saturday’s Ascot race, let’s take a look at the key Queen Elizabeth II Stakes trends to note and also see how many stats Inspiral has in her corner.

A Look At The Main 2022 QEII Stakes Stats & Trends
90% Of The Last 20 Winners Were Aged 3 or 5
A big QEII trend to start with here that’s seen 18 of the last 20 winners aged either 3 or 5. Being a 3 year-old, then Inspiral is fine on this score, but those that don’t tick this age stat are the 2020 winner The Revenant, who is 7, plus Tempus at 6. While the 4 year-olds in the race are the Celebration Mile winner, Jadoomi (watch him winning that race again below) and El Drama.
18 Of The Last 20 Winners Ran At Goodwood, Leopardstown or Longchamp Last Time
Looking back to see the more recent run is another important factor with outings at Goodwood, Leopardstown and Longchamp the venues to look for. This is actually a trend the hot-pot Inspiral falls down on, having raced at Ascot, Newmarket and Deauville in her last races.
Of the rest, Modern Games (who might not run) was in action at Woodbine last time, while Bayside Boy, Tempus and El Drama are others that raced away from the three tracks highlighted.
Therefore, this stat is a plus for The Revenant, who won this race in 2020 (watch below), Checkandchallenge and Tenebrism, who all raced at Longchamp last time, while Jadoomi was winning at Leopardstown when taking the G2 Boomerang Mile there last month.
80% Of The Last 20 Favourites Placed, With 45% Winning Market Leaders
The QEII Stakes in recent times have been a decent race for favourite backers too. Okay, we’ve not had a winning jolly since Roaring Lion in 2018, but with 9 of the last 20 market leaders winning (45%) that’s still not a bad return.
We’ve also seen a massive 80% (16/20) favourites placed, so even if the jollies are not winning – it’s rare that they are not in the mix.
35% Of The Last 20 Winners Trained By Gosden Or O’Brien
We’ve had three French-trained winners of the QEII since 2014, so this is a plus for the only runner from across the Channel – The Revenant.
However, it’s been a race the Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden camps have done well in – winning 4 of the last 10 between them.
In total Gosden has 4 wins, with his first coming in 2000 with Observatory and most recent Roaring Lion in 2000. O’Brien also has four success in the race, with his first in 2006 with George Washington and his latest Minding in 2016.
80% Of The Last 20 Winners Ran In The Last 5 Weeks
Another trend that the big favourite, Inspiral falls down on if you are looking for something to take her on with. Inspiral last raced 62 days ago, when getting home by a neck at Deauville, but with 18 of the last 20 QEII winners in action in the last 5 weeks (approx. 35 days) this is a thumbs down for the Cheveley Park-owned 3 year-old.
All of the other runners fit the bill here – having raced 35 days or less ago.
60% Of The Last 20 Winners Won Last Time Out
Winning last time out is not a must, but it still has a 60% record attached to it. Of the 2022 QEII runners we’ve got four last time out winners – Inspiral, Modern Games, Jadoomi and Bayside Bridge.
