The 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant has been taken out of Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with a maximum of 20 horses allowed and not making the cut – but she’ll now be in action in Saturday’s Prix de Royallieu. See the latest 2022 Arc betting odds below.

2022 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Betting News: Former Melbourne Cup Winner Verry Elleegant Misses Out
The big news surrounding Sunday’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe today is that the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant will MISS the the €5 million Group One.
Now housed in France with trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, his handler was angry the French racing authorities after under their rules was left no choice but to withdraw his 14-time winning 7 year-old
The horse had been located especially with Graffard to run in the Arc and warmed-up for Sunday’s race with a close third in the Prix Foy at Longchamp on 11th Sept.
A Maximum Of 20 Runners Can Contest The Arc
However, as the week went on the mare’s chance of running in the Arc was surrounded with doubt as she was ranked one of the lowest of the remaining entries and with France Galop insisting they would be sticking to the maximum field size of 20 horses, then Verry Elleegant would need some of those rated higher to come out of the race.
Despite being a 9-tme Group One winner in Australia, she was handed a French rating of 113 and that saw her have 20+ horses with a higher mark still in the race. Verry Elleegant was given official French rating of 113 – despite being a nine-time Group 1 winner in Australia – and required two horses to drop out to gain a run in the Arc. No horses above her on the list were scratched on Wednesday, so connections ultimately decided against supplementing her in the expectation she would not get to run.
Verry Elleegant Will Still Be In Action At Longchamp This Weekend
However, all is not totally lost for Verry Elleegant fans and her connections as she’ll still be running at Longchamp this weekend.
Okay, not in the ‘big one’ but now she’s been taken out of the Arc the path is clear (in France horses can’t be entered for 2 races at the same time) for her to run in Saturday’s Qatar Prix de Royallieu, where jockey Mark Zahara will get the leg-up.
Graffard reacted: “The planets really haven’t aligned for us with the Arc being a 72-hour declaration. It’s a very bad situation for French racing. The French authorities have put us in a very bad situation and I’m ashamed by their reaction and the way they have treated my owners and this mare from the day she arrived in France.
“I’m sure this will cost horses being sent to France by foreign owners in the future.
“We had to make a choice otherwise she would end up getting no run in the Arc or the Royallieu. At 11.30am I could see nothing had come out of the Arc so we had to keep her in the Royallieu.”
Luxembourg Still The Arc Favourite
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Luxembourg @ 4/1 with 888Sport remains the 2022 Arc favourite. He’s expected to be ridden by Ryan Moore, who like O’Brien is chasing a third Arc success, and was last out winning the Group One Irish Champions Stakes (1m2f) at the Curragh on Sept 10th. He looks the sort that could have more to come stepping up to 1m4f for the first time and a worthy Arc favourite at this stage.
The talented grey mare Alpinista @ 5/1 with 888Sport (Sir Mark Prescott) also shortened in the Arc betting with the Adayar news and is the general second favourite in the betting to give his shrewd trainer a first Arc success.
Last year’s Arc hero Torquator Tasso @ 6/1 with 888Sport, who was ridden in work by Frankie Dettori on Tuesday morning, also remains in contention to defend his title and try and be the third back-to-back Arc winner since 2014.
Prix du Jockey Club and Coral-Eclipse winner this season Vadeni @ 7/1 with 888Sport and also Titleholder @ 7/1 with 888Sport, who is making the long trip over from Japan, are also still in the race.
This year’s Irish Derby winner Westover @ 10/1 with 888Sport is another big name that remains on course for Sunday’s Arc, which can be viewed on ITV Racing and Sky Sports Racing.
Longchamp Ground Condition
The going at Longchamp was changed to soft, good to soft in places following a sprinkle of raining overnight in Paris, but all of the course used for the Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe has been described as soft. Further rain is forecast on Wednesday.
