Despite a potentially pivotal moment in the race for the Premier League title last night, it would seem punters are ignoring both Arsenal and Manchester City altogether. Betfair have revealed this afternoon that the vast majority of the last 20 bets placed on their Premier League winner market have been in favour of Manchester United.

Manchester United are the closest challengers to reigning champions City and surprise challengers Arsenal, who have occupied first and second for the entirety of the season.

After City’s convincing second-half performance at the Emirates on Wednesday night, their 3-1 victory in the proverbial ‘six-pointer’ leaves Arsenal level on points with Pep Guardiola’s side, after having their eight-point lead decimated in the space of three games.

The market experienced a slight shift as a result, with the Citizens usurping Arsenal to top spot at current 8/15 favourites, while the Gunners are now 9/5 at the time of writing, having been odds on prior to last night’s result.

Despite the pair trading blow for blow all season, Betfair revealed on Twitter that the majority of the Premier League winner wagers are backing Manchester United, who sit five points off both Arsenal and Manchester City.

Erik Ten Hag’s introduction to English football has so far proven pre-season doubters wrong, and the Dutchman has masterminded a surprise resurgence in form that has seen them beat both of the league’s frontrunners already.

With 15 games left to play, it would seem bettors are either siding with the market value, or perhaps their heart with at least a handful of those wagers sure to be from United fans.

They have exhausted all possible chances to take further points off the top two having played the duo home and away already, but with Mikel Arteta’s side stuttering in recent weeks, and City still due to play Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool before the season’s close, their current odds of 20/1 is enough for a select group of punters to take a chance.
