In the latest Premier League VAR news, refereeing board PGMOL are drawing up plans to help improve the way VAR is used. They plan to introduce a pool of ‘VAR Specialists’ in a bid to combat future problems.
Premier League VAR News
The VAR system has come under fire regularly since permanently being introduced into the Premier League since the start of the 2019/20 season.
Even four seasons after being introduced there are still regular problems with the technology. Back in February, the PGMOL were forced to apologise to Arsenal. This came after VAR operator Lee Mason did not draw guidelines to check for an offside as Brentford’s Ivan Toney scored against the Gunners. The mistake ended up costing the league leaders two points.

More recently, the PGMOL issued another apology and this time it was Brighton they apologised to. The Seagulls should have been awarded a clear penalty when Karou Mitoma was fouled by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in a game earlier this month. This mistake even costed Michael Salisbury a game the following week…

PGMOL Chief hopes to sort the Premier League VAR fiasco, and wants to cut mistakes out of the game full stop. He’s reconstructing his VAR team ahead of next season to ensure the best outcome.
A new VAR manager will replace current boss Neil Swarbick, who is retiring at the end of the season. Meanwhile Adam Gale-Watts is set to take over as technical director and Jon Moss as Select Group director.
The PGMOL have also committed to bringing in a group of coaches to help improve on-field referees with their tactical awareness. Hopefully these changes will have a serious impact on VAR issues in England.
