John Stones, who was ruled out in Manchester City’s opener against Burnley, appears to be struggling with an early-season muscular injury.

The Englishman was listed as a substitute in City’s midweek UEFA Super Cup triumph, but remained unused with Guardiola preferring to tread with caution.

The Cityzens boss failed to provide a clear time frame Stones’ return, but he looks almost certain to miss this weekend’s meeting with Newcastle.

“Last training he did not feel comfortable. I don’t know how long he will be out,” he said.

“Now we have a big, big problem especially for this game but in general.”

Elsewhere, Bernardo Silva’s notable absence in Athens on Wednesday will likely see him skip this weekend’s clash, with Guardiola confirming he is “out” with a suspected illness.

Speaking to the press ahead of Saturday’s fixture, he bemoaned his side’s packed schedule after hopping between the continent in midweek.

“We want to continue to compete and we are now in a big, big problem. Not just for this game but in general and that is what it is. Every manager would say the same in my position.

“Come back, arrive here late, and then it’s this game, tomorrow’s game, today we cannot train. I would train but we are not going to do anything because we do not have time. I would love one more day.

“But okay, we accept it, this is the challenge. Every manager would say the same. This is the challenge. This is why we won. Because we overcome all the time this kind of position.”

Doubts also remain over the fitness of Ruben Dias, who has been spotted in training as he recovers from a recent concussion. Although he is back on the field, he has been absent from their previous two matches.
