The second day of action at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship gets underway on Saturday and SportsLens have previewed every match-up plus the order of play.
PDC World Darts Championship Day 2 Preview
We’ll have Day 2 action from the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship to look forward to starting on Saturday at midday, featuring a number of stars including two-time World Champion Gary Anderson to close the evening session.
12:45pm: Lee Evans vs Sandro Eric Sosing (Round One)
Lee Evans opens proceedings on Day 2 against Sandro Eric Sosing in the first round. The best new UK betting sites have priced Evans as the huge 1/5 favourite at Alexandra Palace, having earned over £70,000 in career prize money.
Sosing has played on the Asain Tour to date and is making his World Championship debut. So is Evans, but he has previous, valuable major experience at the UK Open and Players Championship Finals.
Evans has beaten one of the tournament favourites in Michael van Gerwen in the Players Championship circuit this year and should make light work of his opponent. The bookies have probably got this one right and it would be a huge shock if the Englishman was put out.
1:30pm: Connor Scutt vs Krzysztof Kciuk (Round One)
In the second game of the day, Connor Scutt takes on Krzysztof Kciuk at 1:30pm. Scutt, 27, has earned over £60,000 on his career and has previous experience at PDC premier events such as the UK Open and Players Championship Finals.
He’s making his World Championship debut alongside Kciuk, the 2/1 underdog who has claimed over £20,000 in prize money to date than his opponent. The Pole reached the last 72 of this tournament over a decade ago.
For Poland, he’s recorded four last 16 finishes in the World Cup and looks a decent value bet. He’s coming into this one with plenty of momentum, having won the Eastern Europe Qualifier for a spot in the first round.
This match-up is arguably closer than the betting suggests and I’d be siding with Kciuk here. His experience in the competition and being 16 years older than his opponent could play into his hands. We’ve seen Scutt beat some decent names at the Players Championship this year but 5/2 on looks too short.
2:15pm: Jules van Dongen vs Darren Penhall (Round One)
Missouri, USA-born Jules van Dongen is the rightful favourite in the penultimate game of the afternoon session. The 33-year-old has competed in the UK Open and Players Championship Finals this year as well as reaching the last 32 of the World Cup in 2022.
He’s beaten a number of good competitors on the Players Championship grid such as Brendan Dolan, Danny Noppert, Gabriel Clemens, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Gerwyn Price, Gary Anderson and the upcoming Gian van Veen in a European Tour qualifier.
Penhall has also made appearances in major tournament such as the UK Open almost four years ago but has been playing the majority of his darts on the DPA Pro Tour this year. Van Dongen holds the massive experience edge here.
11/4 for the Van Dongen match treble looks decent value in this one.
3:00pm: Dave Chisnall vs Cameron Menzies/Rusty-Jake Rodriguez (Round Two)
Dave Chisnall closes out the afternoon session in the second round, playing the winner of Cameron Menzies vs Rusty-Jake Rodriguez who take to the stage on Friday night.
‘Chizzy’ is one of the most recognisable names in the PDC. He’s earned almost £3 million in career prize money and made it to the World Championship semi-finals in 2021.
He’s got experience in abundance and shouldn’t find either of Menzies or Rodriguez too much of a problem. He’s a fan favourite and will have the full support of the Alexandra Palace crowd.
Chisnall hasn’t exited in the first round since 2014 when he was narrowly defeated by John Henderson. It might be tough to find a betting angle for this match, but Chisnall match treble could be an attractive prospect.
7:15pm: Jamie Hughes vs David Cameron (Round One)
The evening session begins with Jamie Hughes vs David Cameron, which has been priced up as a close encounter by the bookies. Hughes opens as the 4/6 favourite with Cameron slightly odds against at 6/5.
Both men have previous World Championship experience, with Hughes’ best finish in the last 64 three years ago. He’s played in many majors, notably reaching the last 32 of the World Matchplay on two occasions, the last 16 of the Grand Slam and quarter-finals of the UK Open.
He’s a winner on the European Tour too and has been performing at a decent level on the Players Championship scene too. Cameron made the last 64 of this tournament last year, losing to Danny Noppert in the second round.
The Canadian veteran is the current World Seniors Darts Masters champion and is more than capable of upsetting the favourite, which should be an interesting clash.
8:00pm: Keane Barry vs Reynaldo Rivera (Round One)
21-year-old Irishman Keane Barry has plenty of experience at Alexandra Palace, making his fifth appearance in the tournament this year. His best finish came in the second round two years ago, narrowly exiting at the hands of Jonny Clayton.
Barry made the semi-final of the UK Open in 2022 and is considered a good prospect in the sport with much more to offer. At such a young age, he’s also made the last 16 of the Players Championship Finals and deserves respect.
Reynaldo Rivera has been playing on the Asian Tour this year, winning twice, but the youngster is the expected winner here. Barry was upset in the first round by Grant Sampson last time out but knows he should be comfortably winning these games.
8:45pm: Scott Williams vs Haruki Muramatsu (Round One)
Last year, Scott Williams made it to the second round at Alexandra Palace before being sent home by Rob Cross. He’s a previous Players Championship winner and also made the last 16 of the Players Championship Finals in 2022.
He comes up against an established and experienced Japanese veteran in Haruki Muramatsu, the 46-year-old who has reached the last 64 here on three occasions in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
The bookies are favouring Williams in this match-up and whilst he should win comfortably, Muramatsu can’t be written off. Considering his recent performance in the Grand Slam however, it could be that he isn’t playing at the level required to compete in this circuit.
Williams is the deserving favourite but don’t be surprised if Muramatsu unsettles him throughout the encounter.
9:30pm: Gary Anderson vs Simon Whitlock/Paolo Nebrida (Round Two)
Gary Anderson is a two-time World Champion and despite flirting with retirement in recent years, the ‘Flying Scotsman’ knows he’s still got more than enough left in the tank to go to war with the big boys.
He performed well in the TV tournaments in 2023, making the quarter-final of the Grand Slam as well as the last 16 in the Grand Prix, World Matchplay, UK Open and Masters. He finished as runner up to Gerwyn Price in 2021.
Anderson will be out for revenge after being sent home in the last 32 in 2023, knowing he can make a deep run. Assuming Simon Whitlock justifies his strong favouritism to ease past Paolo Nebrida, it’ll be an interesting clash.
Whitlock is also a veteran of the sport, having earned £2.5 million across is career and reached the final at the World Championship in 2010. Whilst his game has left much to be desired in recent times, he still presents a significant threat.
