Paul Townend With Three Rides On Cheltenham Day 2
Paul Townend was crowned the Champion Jockey of the Year last year for his sensational performance at the Cheltenham Festival. He won a staggering five races, including two seconds and three third place finish too. This year, he will be hoping to replicate that form with a stellar showing at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.
On Day 2, Paul Townend has three rides on Wednesday 15th March. These rides include Sir Gerhard, who is the second favourite in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase behind Gerri Colombe.
The two-time Gold Cup winner with Al Boum Photo also has two more rides on Day 2 along with Sir Gerhard. He rides the joint favourite in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Energumene, who has sensational in recent runs and has every chance of beating Edwardstone.
His third and final ride of the day comes in the Champion Bumper where Townend is in the saddle aboard It’s For Me. The 5-year-old mare is being heavily backed in this one, looking to keep up his 100% winning record with a third straight win here.
Townend is also priced as the heavy 2/7 bookies favourite with leading bookmaker BetUKÂ to be the 2023 Cheltenham Festival Champion Jockey.

What Horses Is Paul Townend Riding On Day 2 Of The 2023 Cheltenham Festival?
Wednesday 15th March 2023
SIR GERHARD (Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase – 14.10): @ 9/2 with BetUK
Paul Townend’s first run of the day comes in the second race on Day 2 in the form of Sir Gerhard in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. The Cheltenham odds suggest that Sir Gerhard has ever chance in this one as the second favourite behind Gerri Colombe.
Sir Gerhard has won at Cheltenham the past two years. He won the Champion Bumper back in 2921, before following that up in 2022 by winning the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. The 8-year-old is in great form with four wins from his last five races and is a big player here for trainer Willie Mullins.
ENERGUMENE (Queen Mother Champion Chase – 15.30): @ 13/8 with BetUK
Paul Townend’s second ride on Day 2 of the Cheltenham Festival comes in the form of Energumene in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. This looks like a two-horse race on paper between Energumene and Edwardstone.
Energumene is the joint favourite and has winning experience at Cheltenham too. The 9-year-old won this race 12 months ago, and has every chance of going back-to-back here under the ride of Townend for trainer Willie Mullins.
IT’S FOR ME (Champion Bumper – 17.30): @ 6/1 with BetUK
Paul Townend’s third and final run on Day 2 comes in the Champion Bumper where he saddles the third favourite in It’s For Me. This race has historically been dominated by Mullins, but does have a John Kiely-trained horse as the current favourite in A Dream To Share.
It’s For Me has won both his racing starts to date, and has a real good chance of making it a hat-trick of victories here in the final race of the day on Wednesday. Townend has three really good chances on Day 2 of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.
