80% Of The Last 20 Charlie Hall Chase Winners Were Back From A Break
This isn’t a surprising trend – mainly because the Charlie Hall Chase is a race that is run at the start of the new National Hunt season, so most of the horses running will be returning from a break.
Again, most fit the bill here, with only the Fergal O’Brien-trained Paint The Dream having had a run in the last month.
Horses Priced 7/1 Or Shorter Have Done Well
The Charlie Hall Chase has been a fair race for the punters too with 85% of the last 20 winners priced at 7/1 or shorter in the betting. Over that period we’ve also seen four winning Charlie Hall Chase favourites, while 11 markets leaders were placed.
In 2016 we had a 16/1 winner (Irish Cavalier), but since 2012, eight of the last 10 winners returned 6/1 or less in the betting, while the last four successful horses SP’d at 10/3 or shorter.
At the time of writing, the likes of Bravemansgame, Ahoy Senor and Eldorado Allen are the most likely to be the ones at the head of the Charlie Hall Chase betting market.
70% Of The Last 20 Charlie Hall Chase Winners Were Aged 8 Or Older
Age has been a decent Charlie Hall Chase trend to look for, with 14 of the last 20 winners aged 8 or older. That said, we don’t really want horses aged 10+ as the last winner of this age was in 2004 (Grey Abbey, 10).
Therefore, it’s been horses aged 8 and 9 that have the best recent record – winning 12 of the last 20 runnings. This year, those in that 8-9 age bracket are Eldorado Allen, Win My Wings, and Paint The Dream.
Last year’s winner, Fusil Raffles (watch below) was a 6 year-old, while Bristol De Mai also took this as a 6 year-old in 2017.
Bravemansgame and Ahoy Senor Have Age Trend To Overcome
But the main talking point regarding this age trend is that it seems to be a negative for the likely favourites – Ahoy Senor and Bravemansgame, who are both aged 7.
Irish Cavalier won the race as a 7 year-old and so did Ollie Magern in 2005, but since 1995 these have been the only two winning 7 year-olds of the Charlie Hall Chase.
The Nicholls and Twiston-Davies Yards Have Won 35% Of The Last 17 Runnings
In terms of stables to note, then it’s been a race the Nigel Twiston-Davies and Paul Nicholls yards have dominated – winning 6 of the last 17 between them.
In total, NTD has won the Charlie Hall Chase six times, with wins in 1992 (Tipping Tim) and 1994 (Young Hustler) too, while Nicholls has 4 wins that included See More Business (1999 & 2000) and more recently Silviniaco Conti (2012) and Cyrname (2020).
This year Nicholls will be looking for win number five with Bravemansgame a big fancy and also has Secret Investor entered, while Nigel Twiston-Davies has the bigger-priced Good Boy Bobby entered, who is also a proven course and distance winner.
Charlie Hall Chase Overall Trends Verdict
Of course the two horses with the form in the book are Ahoy Senor and Bravemansgame – the pair last meet in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at the Aintree Grand National meeting with Ahoy Senor winning that day, but Bravemansgame was sent off favourite that day and clearly ran below-par trailing in 30 lengths last of four (watch below).
Ahoy Senor and Bravemansgame are also both rated 161 and so it’s no shock the bookies are having trouble spliting the two in the betting. However, it’s Eldorado Allen that’s the top-rated in the field (162) and despite having to give 3lb away to Ahoy Senor and Bravemansgame can’t be ruled out.
This Tizzard runner won the Denman Chase at Newbury back in February and on that form would be a big player and was also a fair third in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, but since then ran down the field in the Betfair Bowl so needs to bounce back.
On a plus though, ELDORADO ALLEN (e/w) @ 7/2 with 10bet does have a good record fresh – winning the Haldon Gold Cup last season (watch below) after a break and also won his first race back in 2020. Add in that he ticks the key age trend (8), then this Joe Tizzard runner looks the value call away from the main two in the 2022 Charlie Hall Chase betting.
DID YOU KNOW: The Wetherby race became known as the Charlie Hall Memorial Wetherby Pattern Chase in 1978 – this was in memory of the trainer Charlie Hall – and shortened to the present title in 1990.
