Who is The Paddy Power Gold Cup 2023 Favourite?
At this stage there are still 34 Paddy Power Gold Cup entries, with a maximum of 20 horses allowed to run. The five-day declarations will be out on Tuesday 14th November, while the final runners will be listed on Thursday 16th November.
The current Paddy Power Gold Cup 2023 favourite, with the best horse racing betting sites, is the Paul Nicholls-trained STAGE STAR, who has won four of his six career starts over fences.
He was superb winner of the Turners Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival (watch below) and prior to that landed the Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase at the end of January.
Meaning Stage Star is two-from-two over fences at Prestbury Park.
You can see the latest Paddy Power Gold Cup odds from the sponsors below.
Stage Star Will Need To Bounce Back From Poor Aintree Run
However, it wasn’t all smiles for Stage Star last season as it seemed connections went to the well once too often after the improving Nicholls chaser flopped in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase at the Aintree Grand National Festival in April.
The good news for his supporters, is that he’s back at this favoured track – Cheltenham – and connections have also freshened up him with 219-days off.
Stage Star is a horse that’s gone well fresh in the past too – winning first time out last season at Warwick.
Paul Nicholls Has Won The Paddy Power Gold Cup Twice Before
Stage Star’s trainer Paul Nicholls has also got history in the Paddy Power Gold Cup – winning the big Cheltenham November Meeting race twice in the past.
His latest win came in 2014 with the Sam Twiston-Davies-ridden Caid Du Berlais and before that took the prize in 2012 with Al Ferof, with Ruby Walsh doing the steering.
Nicholls is, however, still some way off the record haul in the Paddy Power Gold Cup of trainer Martin Pipe. The now-retired handler mopped up eight wins in his career with the likes of Our Vic, Cyfor Malta (twice) and Celestial Gold, plus son David also added to the good family record with Great Endeavour winning in 2011.
David Pipe doesn’t have any entries for the 2023 renewal, while as well as Stage Star, Nicholls could also run his 6 year-old Il Ridoto, Hitman and Complete Unknown – who all still hold entries.
Other Possible Paddy Power Gold Cup Runners
In a tight-looking betting market, we could also see the Dan Skelton pair of Unexpected Party and Galia Des Liteaux running as the yard look to win the race for the first time.
The Real Whacker, who is rated 162, would have to carry top-weight of 12-0 if connections do take up this preferred race for his comeback and the only horse to win with more than 11st 8lbs since 2003 was Taquin du Seuil in 2016, who lumped 11st 11lbs.
Gary Moore is another trainer that’s won the Paddy Power Gold Cup in the past, when his Baron Alco landed the prize in 2018. The West Sussex-based handler has Black Gerry entered at this stage.
