Bayern Munich have confirmed the deadline-day signing of Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City, with an option to buy for €70m.

The 28-year-old has joined the Bundesliga leaders until the end of the season, with the option to join permanently in the summer for €70m.

The Portuguese defender has been with the Citizens since joining from Juventus in 2019, and has won two Premier League titles, two EFL Cups, and the Community Shield during his time in Manchester.

His exceptional performances also saw him named in the PFA Premier League team of the year for the past two seasons.

Since returning from the World Cup, the full-back has only started for City three times.

This comes due to the emergence of academy prospect Rico Lewis, and the good form of Nathan Ake.

“FC Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world,” Cancelo said.

“It’s enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players in a team.”

“I know that this club, this team lives for titles and wins titles every year. I’m also driven by the hunger for success,” he added.

“I‘ll give my best for FC Bayern.”

Hasan Salihamidzic, an FC Bayern board member shared his thoughts on the move.

“We’re very happy that João Cancelo will now play for FC Bayern. We’ve signed him on loan now and have the possibility of signing him permanently in the summer.”

“João is a player we’ve been thinking about for a while now because we very much appreciate his qualities. He’s the optimal fit in our system with his attacking style of play and dynamism, and his mentality and experience fit very well in our team.” he added.

“I’m convinced João will help us in the coming weeks and months where we want to win titles.”

Bayern are one point clear of Union Berlin at the top of the table, and are 1/8 to retain their title, according to Bundesliga betting sites.
