Left-back is a key area that Steve Cooper wishes to improve ahead of the new season. Renan Lodi played there last term following his loan move from Atletico Madrid, but has now signed permanently for Marseille in Ligue 1.

Cooper was speaking on the vacant positions in his squad: “Renan was a starting player for us last season. We lost a goalkeeper and a left-back because they were loans. We need to replace that to get back to where we finished last season, then hopefully move some players in and move some players out, and make us stronger. That’s what we’re looking to do.”

Maatsen is currently away with Chelsea on their pre-season tour in the United States, where he will get the opportunity to impress Mauricio Pochettino.
