Tom Scudamore has called time on his 25-year career as a jump jockey after announcing his shock retirement after unseating, on what was now his final ride, at Leicester on Thursday.

No 2023 Cheltenham Festival for Tom Scudamore As Retirement With Immediate Effect

There will be no 2023 Cheltenham Festival for leading jumps jockey Tom Scudamore as the 40 year-old announced his retirement from the saddle on Thursday.

The decision came after Scudamore unseated from a horse called Ya Know Yaseff at Leicester on Thursday, who was aptly trained by David Pipe – his biggest supporters over the years.

Scudamore told The Daily Mail: “I had a concussion 10 days ago and I have been concussed a few times in the past. At my age you have to be careful. I feel I have had a bit of a warning and falls I could take in the past are harder to take now. There was no concussion after my fall at Leicester but I got a right kicking and I thought I have had my warning now. Not everybody gets to go out on their own terms but I am. I am not retiring, I am just changing job, although I don’t know what that job will be yet!”

Of, course it’s a shame Scudamore hasn’t bowed out with a winner, but during 25 years in the saddle amassed over 1,500 winners, that contained ten Cheltenham Festival successes and many big race wins – including the 2016 King George VI Chase at Kempton on Thistlecrack.

The retirement is also with immediate effect, so there will be no 2023 Cheltenham Festival for Scudamore. His last winner at the biggest jumps meeting of the year came on Un Temps Pour Temps in 2017 in the Ultima Trophy Handicap Chase, which was Scudamore’s best Festival contest with three wins over the years.

Scudamore Rode 1,511 Winners During His Career

Tom Scudamore will end his riding career with 1,511 winners to his name – which despite being 181 short of his dad Peter’s haul of 1,692, this tally still sees Tom Scudamore in the top ten all time jumps jockey list – with only the likes of AP McCoy, Richard Johnson, Ruby Walsh, Barry Geraghty, Richard Dunwoody, Peter Scudamore and Paul Carberry ahead of him.

What’s Next For Scudamore?

Scudamore has not revealed what’s next for him, but having already followed in his father’s footsteps to ride – is there a chance he might end up training too? His dad, Peter is assistant trainer to Grand National-winning handler Lucinda Russell, while Tom’s bother Michael also trains horses.
