Tom Brady, who is widely regarded as the greatest NFL player of all-time, has become a minority owner at Birmingham City.

Tom Brady is the latest American football star to infiltrate English soccer – or football as it is commonly refereed to on these shores – after former Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt purchased a minority stake in newly promoted Burnley earlier this year.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion retired from the sport back in February, and his off-field endeavours have taken him to the Midlands where he enters a new partnership with Birmingham owners Knighthead Capital Management.

The investment group acquired controlling ownership of the Blues towards the tail end of last season.

Brady, now 46, will immediately become the chairman of a new advisory board at St Andrew’s, and the co-founder of Knighthead Tom Wagner could not hide his excitement at bringing the NFL legend on board.

“Tom Brady joining the Birmingham City team is a statement of intent,” he said.

“We are setting the bar at world class.”

Birmingham City have remained in the Championship since their relegation from the top-flight in 2011, but the ambitions of their new owners are boundless.

The nature of Brady’s role will be largely focused on raising the profile of the club, using his unique global profile to seek new investment opportunities.

Wagner also said that Brady is committed to making Birmingham a “respected leader in nutrition, health and wellness” across the world.

The man himself also released a statment, in which he said:

“Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion, and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me.

“BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none.

“I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.”
