Neymar Transfer Odds: Chelsea Among Favoured Suitors After Meeting in Paris

Despite returning to his imperious, world-beating best for PSG this season, reports suggest that Neymar’s time in Paris could be nearing its conclusion with the club eager to recoup some of the £190 million they spent on the Brazilian almost six years ago.

Although he has shown flashes of his former glory, Neymar’s career so far in France has been underpinned by frustrating spells on the sidelines, persistent rumours of clashing egos in the dressing room and a thousand whispers all questioning what life would have been like had he stayed put in Barcelona.

Alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, he looks to be enjoying his football once again however, and the fleet-footed 31-year-old has racked up an impressive 18 goals and 17 assists across all competitions. In another agonising career setback, he was pictured in tears after being stretchered off in PSG’s victory over Lille on Sunday, and it remains to be seen how severe the injury to his ankle is.

Nevertheless, rumours of his future persist, with rumblings of his unhappiness always seemingly bubbling under the surface throughout his time in the French capital. After spending a world-record £190 million to bring him to the club in 2017, reports suggest that the board are eager to regain some of that investment before his value starts to depreciate.

Now in his 30’s, it is unclear how this latest injury setback may affect his value and the Ligue 1 champions could look to the summer window in order to offload Neymar at an optimal price.

Last week, it emerged that Todd Boehly had met with PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi to discuss a potential deal for the Brazilian, and if there is one club that can afford his astronomical £600,000-a-week wage, it is free-spending Chelsea.

An approach for Neymar would be in direct conflict with their youthful transfer policy in the previous two windows, but passing up an opportunity to sign one of football’s most mercurial talents may be difficult.

However, despite a supposed meeting taking place in Paris last week, his former club Barcelona are 7/1 favourites according to the latest Neymar transfer odds. His departure from Catalonia some six years ago signalled a sharp downfall for Barcelona, who have since claimed just two La Liga trophies and two Copa Del Reys.

It is hard to imagine a scenario where the Blaugrana can create enough surplus on their sizeable wage bill in order to bring Neymar back in a dream move for the club. There have been several instances where he has been close to returning to Barca in recent seasons, but their financial problems remain a huge stumbling block for a deal of this magnitude.

A blasphemous move to Real Madrid is priced at 8/1 which may incite a Luis Figo/pig-head type scenario should it materialise, while a move to either side of Manchester seems unlikely, with City at 12/1 and United valued at 14/1.
