The Conservative Party are embroiled in yet another scandal in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic, further compounded by the expectation that they will concede power to the opposition in the near future. In light of this latest transgression, we are taking a look at the latest next general election odds to see how the bookmakers value the Tories’ chances.

The front pages are dominated by a whitewash of WhatsApp messages from former health secretary Matt Hancock, who previously came under intense scrutiny for admitting to breaking social distancing rules, that he himself imposed on the general public.

In the summer of 2021, he was forced to resign from his cabinet position after CCTV footage showed him kissing Gina Coladangelo, his aide with whom he was having an affair. All the while, the British public were restricted to gatherings of two people or less indoors to quell the spread of coronavirus, and many were quick to point out they had missed loved one’s funerals and weddings as a result.

The latest scandal to sweep through the media supposedly reveals a series of damning messages from Hancock, with suspicions that ministers weren’t following the scientific recommendations now seemingly confirmed.

It also highlights a ‘one rule for the ruling elite and another for the electorate’, with one such exchange with party member Jacob Rees-Mogg revealing Hancock had personally arranged for a courier to collect a covid test for his child, amid a nationwide shortage of testing kits.

This follows a similar theme to the Partygate scandal where Conservative members inside Number 10 were revealed to have thrown parties during lockdown, and it subsequently signalled the end of Boris Johnson‘s tenure as prime minister after he was found to be among the guilty party.

These are just some of the litany of wrongdoings to have erupted from within Conservative Party over the last several years, with everything from sleazy false expenses, cocaine use, sexual harassment claims, bullying within the party and the current PM wife’s non-domicile status.

As a result, public opinion polls have swung firmly in the favour of the Labour Party, who have been absent from power since 2010. The most recent figures as of late last month reveal that around two in three are eager for a change in leadership.
