Of course, as they so often do, Manchester City found a way to snatch three points after Julian Alvarez’s solitary goal was enough to hand them a second consecutive win in this head-to-head.
In fact, Newcastle hold a torrid recent record against the champions, failing to win in any of the previous 10 meetings; a run that stretches back to January 2019.
They may take a slither of comfort in managing to hold them to a 3-3 draw in the most recent meeting at St James’ Park – the venue for this third round cup tie.

Last season’s top two defences locked horns just over a month ago, and their stoutness at the back was plain to see.
It was a niggly, grating watch for neutrals hoping for a high-quality fixture. Although it certainly had its moments, it was largely a tactical to-and-throw, with chances few and far between.
Julian Alvarez, who may be a worthwhile goalscorer selection at 9/4 given his recent record, proved to be the difference that day, and we are expecting it to be another fixture in which neither side give each other an inch.

Newcastle vs Manchester Tip 2: Manchester City to Win
Manchester City’s four-year monopoly over this competition was ended in 2021/22, and they haven’t returned to the final since.
Although they would of course go on to register a historic treble last season, Pep Guardiola would more than likely have been ruing the chance to become the first ever English side to win the quadruple.
It almost seems inconceivable that this feat was prevented by Southampton – who finished rock-bottom of the Premier League – in last year’s quarter-final stage.
Expect four-time winner Guardiola and his side to make a genuine push for this trophy once more – there is little left for them to achieve other than going one better than their trifecta of trophies in 2022/23.
