Newcastle United have opened talks with AC Milan over the signing of Sandro Tonali as the search for a new midfielder this summer goes on.

The Magpies are determined to bolster their midfield ahead of the new season but it has proved difficult so far. After targeting Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella, talks have gone quiet with the Italian side wanting up to £70m for his services.

Eddie Howe’s side are also heavily interested in Leicester City ace James Maddison, however the Foxes’ asking price of £60m is fairly steep. Maddison only has one year left on his contract, which means Leicester are likely to sell him this summer. However, Tottenham are currently favourites to sign him, with the player reportedly preferring a move to London.

Newcastle are set to bid £42m for Tonali which may not be enough to prize the 23-year-old away from the San Siro, due to his importance at the club.

If the Italy international does sign, then Howe would be expected to push Bruno Guimaraes further up the pitch.

Tonali helped Milan to the Serie A title two seasons ago, and also played a huge part in their recent run to the Champions League semi-finals.

He would bring leadership to St James’ Park and the Italian is set to captain his country in the under-21 European Championships, and he could develop into a key member of the Newcastle dressing room in the coming seasons.
