Newcastle United remain confident that Bruno Guimaraes will sign a new contract at the club, despite Barcelona being interested in the midfielder.

Since his arrival in January 2022, Guimaraes has helped transform Newcastle into a top four side and has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. In 40 games this season, he has five goals and five assists.

His instrumental form has attracted interest from a number of sides across Europe, with Barcelona and Real Madrid amongst those interested in his signature.

However, the Brazilian is happy at St James’ Park, and talks over a huge new contract are well underway and Newcastle will hope to wrap up an extension before the new season starts.

While Barca are known to be admirers of Guimaraes, he is not believed to be among their top priorities heading into the summer. Although if they do want to sign the 25-year-old, it will cost them around £87million to sway Newcastle into letting him go.

With money an issue for the Catalan giants, they have their eyes set on Ilkay Gundogan, who could soon be a free agent. The German is yet to sign a new deal with Manchester City, but remains one of Xavi’s top transfer targets for Barcelona.

Legendary midfielder Sergio Busquets is departing Barca after 18 years at the club, with Xavi keen on finding a replacement in his position.
