Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for Chelsea loan star Joao Felix if they are in the Champions League next season.

The Portugal international is out of favour at Atletico Madrid after falling out with manager Diego Simeone, and moved to Stamford Bridge on loan in January.

Atletico are believed to be keen on offloading Felix permanently this summer, with Chelsea interested in a long-term deal as well as the Magpies.

The Blues have been happy with Felix’s impact since his arrival with the 23-year-old scoring three times in the Premier League, and has generally impressed with his all-round game.

Felix is of interest permanently for Chelsea, however their primary focus is on securing a move for a more traditional goalscoring number nine – a profile that Felix doesn’t exactly fit.

Atletico are demanding up to €100m (£87m) for Felix and Newcastle are serious contenders according to Spanish newspaper Marca, but they’ll need to qualify for the Champions League to have any chance.

The Magpies are currently third in the Premier League ahead of Manchester United on goal difference. Liverpool are also breathing down their necks in fifth and are one point behind, though have played a game more.

Felix is keen to play in the Champions League next season and would consider a move to the North East if Newcastle secure a top four finish.
