Newcastle’s Italian renaissance this summer might not be over just yet, with the Magpies reportedly turning their attention towards Galatasaray midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.

With Champions League football on the horizon, Newcastle’s wildly ambitious hierarchy have sought to provide Eddie Howe with the necessary additions to compete next season.

Their three incomings so far are spread across the midfield, with Leicester’s Harvey Barnes the latest to make the switch to Tyneside. He joins teenage livewire Yankuba Minteh and marquee signing Sandro Tonali in what has so far been a commendable transfer window.

Although their Financial Fair Play restrictions are tighter than most at the top of the table, the Magpies have so far been savvy in the market since their Saudi-backed takeover two years ago.

It appears their ambitions for next season know no bounds, with reports suggesting their business in the transfer market is far from over.

That is according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, who claim that Newcastle have made initial contact with Galatasaray over the availability of Italian maestro Nicolo Zaniolo.

The former Roma playmaker was on the verge of making a surprise move to Bournemouth in the winter, while other interested parties in the shape of Everton and Leeds also made considerable efforts to bring him to England.

However, the 24-year-old’s career path eventually led him to Turkey, where he has pulled at the heart strings of the Galatasaray faithful after netting five goals in 10 games in the Super Lig.

Zaniolo fits the mould of an attacking midfielder who can operate in half spaces, a profile Eddie Howe appears keen to bring to St James’ Park after losing out on James Maddison, who opted for a move to Tottenham.

Any deal for Zaniolo, having only joined in February, would be made difficult to complete by Galatasaray. However, the Turkish club managed to acquire him for the measly sum of £14.1m – his value is worth at least double that figure.

An important bid may swing them into selling should it be profitable enough, but they will know full well the economic might of Newcastle and will look to bump up their valuation.
