Throughout the 2022/23 season, the FA have issued over 100 fines to English clubs in the top flight and the Championship, worth a total of well over £1 million. However, with several clubs yet to be on the receiving end of a reprimand, and others contributing a large slice of that total figure, we are looking at who has the most Premier League fines this season.
Only five clubs have so far avoided a fine from the FA this term; Bournemouth, West Ham, Leicester, Brentford and perhaps most surprising of all, Newcastle.
The Magpies have excelled at frustrating some of the league’s more potent teams, with Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag even labelling their time wasting antics as ‘annoying.’ Against Arsenal in January, the fixture saw just 52% of active in-play action, while Eddie Howe’s side rank with the second-lowest average for in-play action this term at just 51.9%.
Nevertheless, their tactics don’t fall under any FA breaches which has seen them remain unscathed, but when taking a look at the other end of the spectrum, an intriguing pattern emerges with the Premier League’s current top three all ranking in the first four for most fines this year.
It comes as no surprise to see Arsenal rank as the FA’s public enemy number one, having been fined on four occasions so far. With all of the charges relating to a failure to control players, the club have had to fork out a total of £185,000 – a small price to pay if they are to see out a first title in two decades.
Elsewhere, champions Manchester City, who rank fourth on the fine leaderboard, received the single biggest fine of any side after they were handed a sizeable £75,000 sanction for their behaviour throughout the victory at the Emirates in February.
All in all, a grand total of £932,500 worth of fines has been dished out to 15 Premier League clubs, although that figure will inevitably top £1m with Fulham expected to receive a heavy punishment for their appalling meltdown in the FA Cup, where Willian, Alexandar Mitrovic and manager Marco Silva were all sent off in the space of a minute.
This comes after the FA sent a warning to clubs across England recently, reminding them of their responsibility to control their player’s behaviour on the pitch and towards officials. Further down the pyramid, the discipline numbers also show little sign of improvement with 15 teams in the Championship, 13 in League One and 12 in League Two all being punished for misconduct.
