Liverpool secured three points in dramatic fashion after Darwin Nunez’s last-minute winner and set a Premier League record.

Last Minute Winners In The Premier League

Scoring a last-minute winner is one of the highest highs in football, securing three points at the death and knowing there is no way back for your opposition.

The Premier League has seen some truly iconic moments in the dying minutes of a match, from Aguero’s infamous title winner to Michael Owen’s derby day decider for Manchester United.

This season has been no different, with 22 90th minute winners being scored already and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have extended their tally to 44 winning goals in the 90th minute (or later).

The most recent addition came through Darwin Nunez’s dramatic winner at Nottingham Forest, which is the latest goal in Liverpool’s Premier League history and the tenth latest goal in England’s top-flight.

Liverpool’s winner against Forest was their third in added-time this season (in the Premier League), with Nunez and Harvey Elliot scoring the previous two against Newcastle/Crystal Palace respectively.

In contrasting fashion, Tottenham’s defeat to Wolves in November 2023 was the 27th time that the Lilywhites have last a match in the 90th minute of a match – the most in Premier League history.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were in the lead originally but suffered a 2-1 defeat after two goals in added time from Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina.

Everton overtook West Ham and Fulham for winning goals conceded in the 90th minute or later in their most recent Premier League match (March 2nd 2024) – after Tomas Soucek’a strike for West Ham at Goodison Park.

Interestingly, Manchester United have conceded just six match deciding goals after the 90th minute, despite playing in the Premier League each year.

One of these goals occured during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, as Thierry Henry scored for Arsenal in 2007 and secured all three points for the Gunners at Old Trafford.

United’s recent defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford brought the last 90th minute decider, as Alex Iwobi earned all three points for the Cottagers.

The Nigerian’s effort was the first time a player had scored a 90th minute winner at Old Trafford since Patrick Van Aanholt managed it in August 2019 for Crystal Palace.
