Michael Owen has been slammed for comparing Darwin Nunez to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba on Tuesday night during Liverpool’s 5-2 Champions League demolition by Real Madrid.

Many fans have branded Owen ’embarrassing’ after the Ballon D’Or winner compared Darwin Nunez to Drogba during Liverpool’s game with Real Madrid, saying that he has the talent to become a top player.

“I didn’t think he’d be this raw coming to Liverpool…he is going to have to be coached to be a top player,” said the pundit.

“The player I’d probably liken him to is Didier Drogba, not in the same style. But when Drogba came to these shores, people laughed at him for the first year or so! His touch was awful, and he made mistakes, but he just got used to the game.”

Nunez scored Liverpool’s first on Tuesday night with a clever flick in the box beating Thibaut Courtois. The goal was the Uruguayan’s second in as many games after scoring against Newcastle at the weekend as well.

Fans were quick to criticise Owen’s comments however and it’s no surprise as he compared Nunez (with just seven Premier League goals) to a Chelsea all-time great in Didier Drogba, who finished his career with 104 Premier League goals to his name.

Many were surprised to see Owen praising Nunez so highly after the Liverpool striker was substituted after an hour when the Reds were 4-2 down. The game finished 5-2 and Liverpool are now left with a huge challenge on their hands if they want to stay in Europe this season, with a three goal deficit to overcome at the Bernabeu.

If Nunez really is the player that Owen thinks he is, then he will play a crucial part in Liverpool’s second leg game against Madrid in a couple of weeks, as the Reds desperately try to save their season.
