West Ham are reportedly in the market for a new midfielder following the departure of club captain Declan Rice, and the likes of Scott McTominay and James Ward-Prowse have been named as potential targets.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay and Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse are being eyed as potential replacements for Declan Rice at West Ham.

The pair have been named in a long-list of midfielders who the Hammers are reportedly monitoring as they look to replace their Arsenal-bound skipper.

Although there is certainly interest in the midfield duo, an official approach is yet to have been made by the club.

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria is another who is named in Sky Sports News’ report, as West Ham continue to hold talks with Juventus over his transfer. However, the report claims that a gap in valuation still exists between the East Londoners and the Serie A giants.

The Hammers had also held talks with Ajax over the transfer of Edson Alvarez, as well as with Fulham over the availability of Joao Palhinha, although a move for the latter is unlikely due to a huge gap in valuations.

Whoever the Conference League champions sign, they face a huge task in replacing Rice both on the pitch, and in the dressing room.

An academy product who captained the club to European glory last term, Rice was unsurprisingly a fan favourite at the London Stadium, but the club will now have to cope without his presence in and around the club.

The England international completed a record-breaking £105million move to fellow London club Arsenal on Saturday, to which he departed with a heartfelt open letter to supporters.
