Despite late interest being reported in Jose Mourinho, Chelsea are set to snub their former manager in favour of Mauricio Pochettino who will become the fifth man in the hot seat under Todd Boehly’s reign.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are entering the final stages of Pochettino’s appointment and the Argentine manager will take over in June instead of stepping in immediately.

The Blues face an uphill battle to finish in the top ten of the Premier League table, currently sitting 12th with 39 points after 33 games.

Chelsea have failed to win in their last nine games across all competitions including seven losses, despite over £500m being pumped into the club over two transfer windows since Boehly’s takeover last year.

According to Premier League betting sites, the former Tottenham boss is an odds-on price of 1/20 to be named Chelsea manager.

Jose Mourinho is second favourite to take over from interim Frank Lampard at a price of 12/1, but reports suggest Boehly has opted to go for Pochettino and a fairytale return for Mourinho is unlikely.

Pochettino has proven experience in England’s top flight after joining Chelsea’s local rivals Spurs in 2014 after a successful spell at Southampton. The 51-year-old led the north London club to a runner-up finish in the league six years ago.

He also guided Tottenham to a Champions League final appearance final in 2019 despite receiving no financial backing the previous summer, where they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.

The readily available resources and funds at Chelsea would present a new challenge to Pochettino in England, having spent over £500 million on transfers since the takeover in May 2022.

He suffered an ankle injury against Southampton in mid-March and is nearing a return as the Red Devils look to close out a top four finish and FA Cup triumph over Manchester City.
