Mauricio Lara became world champion in February 2023 after sensationally knocking Leigh Wood out in their WBA World Featherweight Title fight in Nottingham. However, fast forward three months and Wood got his revenge on Lara. The Mexican was simply unable to successfully defend his world crown.
Up to now in his 30 fight professional boxing career, ‘Bronco’ has had his hand raised all but four times. Of those 26 victories, the Mexican has finished 19 of his opponents inside the scheduled distance.
Lara made his professional debut back in October 2015, actually losing the fight over four rounds. However, Lara didn’t let that get to him as he won three of his next four bouts via knockout. Since then, Lara has added another 16 stoppages to his impressive resumé.
Mauricio Lara was somewhat an unknown quantity up until two or three years ago. ‘Bronco’ came over to fight Josh Warrington in a fight that the Leeds man was expected to win with ease as a huge favourite with the best boxing betting sites. However, that was most certainly not the case. Lara ended up battering the ‘Leeds Warrior’ from pilar to post before stopping him in the nineth round of their bout.
As customary with huge upsets, there was an immediate rematch which ended in a technical draw after Lara was cut over the eye in the second round after an accidental clash of heads. However, it was evident that Lara had quickly became one of the biggest problems at 126-pounds, with Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn signing him to their stable.

Lara has had a fantastic career so far. Almost punch perfect. He has gradually stepped up levels each and every time he has fought. The only defeats on his record came at the hands of Leigh Wood, Eliot Chavez and Julio Carabino on debut. Two of these fights were at the beginning of Lara’s career when he was inexperienced and raw.
Two fights ago, Lara made his dreams come true by becoming world champion for the very first time. Lara silenced the hostile Nottingham crowd by defeating their hero Leigh Wood via seventh round knockout. Lara was the pre-fight favourite with the best UK sports betting sites, but he was losing the fight before finding a huge left hook to end the bout in Round 7.
Last time out in the immediate rematch with Leigh Wood, Lara was understandably an even bigger favourite with the best sports betting apps to beat ‘Leigh-Thal’ for the second time. However, that is not how the fight went by any stretch of the imagination. Wood put on an incredibly performance, winning arguably every round.
Lara underperformed, with Wood winning his world title straight back at the first time of asking. Going forward, there are still some huge fights there for the Mexican. But he will first need to get back to winning ways before any more shots at world titles at 126-pounds.
Lara can most definitely come again and can become a two-time world champion, but first he must decide what weight division he wants to campaign in first. It would take a brave person to write off Lara from becoming world champion again in the not so distant future!
