Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has announced his departure from social media giant Twitter due to new owner Elon Musk’s changes to the platform.
In a tweet on Thursday afternoon, the 24-year-old told his 1.8 million followers that he is deleting his account despite an enjoyable set of years connecting with fans.
Mount believes the platform is changing, hinting at the new verification rules introduced by Elon Musk. Musk has said he plans to get rid of legacy verified checkmarks, meaning those who were previously verified would have to pay a monthly subscription to keep it.
Users can subscribe to ‘Twitter Blue’ for £11 a month or £115 for an annual fee. Also, Musk’s new policy – branded ‘freedom of speech’ – means negative or hate tweets will be ‘deboosted’ but not banned.
Mount shared a link to where fans can find his other social media accounts, such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

The England international is having a far from ideal season at Chelsea, with his lowest goal return since his debut 2019/20 season.
He has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer following reports that the Reds’ hopes of signing Jude Bellingham are all but over.
His playing time continues to decrease, averaging just 69 minutes a game in the Premier League this season, compared to 74 last year and 80 in 2020/21.
With the return of Frank Lampard, who managed Mount at Derby County and the coach who arguably brought the best out of him at Chelsea, fans have been keen to see improved form.
Mount is still yet to start under Lampard’s second spell as manager but has made substitute appearances against Brighton and both legs in the Champions League quarter-final defeats to Real Madrid.
