La Liga have blocked the registration of Marcos Alonso’s new contract at Barcelona after the league deemed it fails to align with their salary cap.

It is no secret that Barcelona’s financial woes have led to returning president Joan Laporta enacting several outlandish economic strategies, in an attempt to steady the ship.

However, their latest setback comes in the form of Marco Alonso’s contract extension, which was agreed and signed last week to tie down the Spaniard for another season. Despite this, reports claim that La Liga have blocked the registration due to concerns over Financial Fair Play regulations.

In the face of financial adversity, the club agreed to offer Alonso a contract extension after only initially being able to sign him on a one-year contract, in order to temporarily subvert funds elsewhere.

This is the latest episode in the fractious relationship between the league and the Catalan giants, with Financial Fair Play regulations coming into play when they attempted to register Golden Boy recipient Gavi as a fully-fledged member of the first-team.

Rather incredibly, the 18-year-old remains registered as an academy player despite making 28 appearances for the Spanish league leaders this season. It was hoped the departure of Memphis Depay to Atletico Madrid, as well as the recent retirement of Gerard Pique, may free up space for contract renewals, although La Liga are remaining stubborn and are sticking closely to the regulations.

Perhaps an even more startling example is the contract extension of centre-back Ronald Araujo, who signed a new four-year-deal way back in April of last year. However, the Uruguayan’s registration has continually been blocked by the league until such time the club can balance their salary bill.
