Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Chelsea’s Mason Mount and submitted a bid totalling £50m to sign the out-of-favour midfielder.

According to David Ornstein, the new bid consists of a £45m base fee and £5m in add-ons to pry the 24-year-old from Chelsea’s grasp and bolster Erik ten Hag’s midfield options.

Chelsea have countered the offer by demanding £60m + £5m add-ons. United have already had a bid of £40m rejected some weeks ago.

An agreement is edging ever closer and talks over a contract extension at Stamford Bridge have stalled, with Mount preferring to depart the club in favour of a new challenge.

The England international failed to make any real impact at Chelsea this past season, marking his lowest goal return since his debut 2019/20 campaign.

His playing time has continued to decrease – averaging just 69 minutes a game in the Premier League, compared to 74 last year and 80 in 2020/21.
