Manchester United are facing an unexpected uphill battle to finish in the Premier League top four this season following another defeat, this time at the hands of Crystal Palace.

Joachim Andersen scored the only goal of the game after 25 minutes with a first-time beauty on the half-volley from Eberechi Eze’s delivery, marking their second league victory in the last four outings.

Palace have broken into the top half of the table with the three points, two clear of Saturday’s opponents in tenth. Today’s encounter was a stark contrast from when they met in the EFL Cup earlier this week, where United eased to a 3-0 win.

In seven Premier League games so far, the Red Devils have recorded four defeats and three wins – scoring seven and conceding 11, a disappointing look for Erik ten Hag in his second season as manager.

According to Premier League betting sites, Manchester United are further down the pecking order than they’d like to finish in the Champions League spots this season – holding the seventh-best odds of 7/2.

They’re all but out of the title race and it could spell doom for Ten Hag as manager at Old Trafford, just months after he led the club to their first silverware in six years with triumph in the EFL Cup.

Marcus Rashford looks a shadow of the player he was last season and the Dutchman appears to have lost the confidence of the dressing room at an alarming early stage in the campaign.
