Manchester United were outclassed on their return to the Champions League, losing 4-3 at Bayern Munich in a scoreline that suggests the game was far closer than it actually was.
Leroy Sane opened the scoring just shy of the half hour mark from the edge of the area but it was one that Andre Onana won’t want to watch back as the ball slipped through his arms and trickled in.
A terrific solo run from Jamal Musiala set up Serge Gnabry with all the time in the world to make it 2-0, firing home into the far corner and doubling Bayern’s lead just four minutes later.
Rasmus Hojlund bagged his first goal for United quickly after the restart from a deflected effort inside the box but the comeback was short-lived as VAR awarded the hosts a penalty which Harry Kane converted following Christian Eriksen’s handball.
Casemiro sparked hope in the 88th minute that the visitors could potentially earn a point, but Bayern edged further in front once again through Mathys Tel in the 92nd minute.
The Brazilian midfielder got his second of the night from Bruno Fernandes’ corner in the 95th minute but it was too little too late for United who began their Group A adventure with defeat.

According to Champions League betting sites, Bayern remain the second-favourites to win the competition at 5/1 whilst Manchester United hold odds of 25/1 to manage a fourth European Cup triumph this season.
Erik ten Hag’s side have now lost three games on the trot in all competitions following consecutive 3-1 defeats in the Premier League against Arsenal and Brighton, with their struggles amplified on the European stage.
Tonight’s defeat was a reminder of how far away the Red Devils remain from Europe’s elite clubs such as Bayern, Manchester City and Real Madrid despite spending a fortune since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
