The Europa League last 16 draw has thrown up some fascinating ties across the board, with both Arsenal and Manchester United handed tough tests in their pursuit of European silverware.
After a scintillating 4-3 aggregate win over Barcelona in their knockout playoff tie, Manchester United have been rewarded with another tough Spanish opponent in the shape of Real Betis, who sailed through their Europa League group without succumbing to defeat.
They currently sit four points off a Champions League place in La Liga, and represent a team with solid European experience in recent seasons having been knocked out by eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt at this stage last year. The Benito Villamarín is notorious for fervent, intimidating atmospheres and United will be well aware of the test ahead.
Elsewhere, Arsenal face a stern test with an away trip to Lisbon up first to face Sporting. The Portuguese side narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Champions League last 16 after falling to defeat on the final matchday to Frankfurt, but notable victories over the German outfit in the reverse fixture, plus a convincing 2-0 win over Arsenal’s bitter rivals Tottenham highlight the task at hand.
Despite this, the Gunners won all but one of their six Europa League group games, and will take comfort in the fact they return to North London for the second leg.
