Thomas Tuchel takes charge of his first European fixture as Bayern Munich manager, going up against the side he defeated in 2021 to lift the Champions League as Chelsea manager.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola, who has a 54% win percentage in the knockout stages, welcomes the team he guided to three Bundesliga titles between 2013 and 2016, in the hope of lifting the European ‘curse’ that has so far prevented him from winning a third Champions League title.

Although there have been seven meetings between these two teams in previous years, it is the first time since November 2014 that they have met in this competition, which leaves this first-leg quarter-final tie wide open to interpretation. Nevertheless, it pits two serial domestic champions against one and another, and according to the latest bookmaker odds, two of the three frontrunners for the trophy.

Despite succumbing to defeat just three times this term, the Germans are handed just a 22.6% chance of winning this evening’s first leg in Manchester, according to Opta’s supercomputer.

This is largely in part due to Man City’s iron-clad record at the Etihad this season, winning all but two of their 14 Premier League fixtures and sweeping aside every opponent in the competition on home soil thus far.

They are also firmly in contention for a historic treble, but much has been made over Guardiola’s inability to clinch a European title since his last triumph with Barcelona 12 years ago, so expect a high-octane performance from the outset.

Opta’s supercomputer have handed the Citizens a 28.2% chance of winning a first Champions League trophy, which puts them well ahead of emerging heavyweights Napoli (21.1%) and tonight’s stumbling block Bayern Munich (18.5%).
