At least three Manchester City players are worth more individually than Luton’s entire squad – with the two sides meeting on Sunday.
In a battle of the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ in the Premier League, champions City travel to Luton for this David Vs Goliath clash. Pep Guardiola’s squad is a meticulously assembled juggernaut of global football, and has dominated the English landscape for the past decade.
They finally conquered Europe last season, lifting the UEFA Champions League for the first time as they completed a historic treble. With a roster full of superstars – and international players warming the bench – it is the most expensive side ever assembled.
Luton on the other hand have worked their way up from non-league obscurity over the past decade, only returning to the Football League in 2014. They made a top-flight comeback this season, having last played in the first tier back in 1992.
But having spent ten years climbing back up the footballing pyramid, their squad isn’t filled with household names or big-money imports. As a result, Luton’s entire squad is valued at less than a number of individual Manchester City players.
Luton Squad Value
According to figures from Transfermarkt.com, Luton’s squad value is around £75 million. The most valuable of these players is Albert Sambi Lokonga, at £15 million. The Belgian midfielder joined Luton on loan from Arsenal for the season but has made just two appearances for the Hatters.
As for permanent signings, Luton’s record arrival is fullback Ryan Giles, who arrived from Wolves for £5 million. Luton’s entire transfer spending over the summer window was a modest £19.5 million.
For comparison, Manchester City’s transfer spend in the same window was £207 million.
Manchester City’s Most Expensive Players
City dwarf most clubs in the world when it comes to squad value. At an estimated £1.1 billion, City’s players are worth more than 14 times than of their Luton counterparts.
Three of these are worth more on their own than Luton’s entire squad. Midfield maestro Rodri is one of these, with the Spaniard among Pep Guardiola’s most vital players.
Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2019, he’s become a cornerstone of everything City do. As essential cog in Guardiola’s well-oiled machine, his value to the side is far higher than his reported price tag.
But at £86 million, Rodri is no bargain buy. Anyone wanting to pry him away from the Etihad may have to pay well in excess of this figure, but it is still more than Luton’s entire squad is valued at.
PEP 💬 Rodri’s so important, definitely. But that’s so simplistic to say one player. I will say it’s not just that, there are many factors. There are games and moments where he didn’t play in previous seasons but we were really good. Maybe there’s a lack of consistency in our… pic.twitter.com/sTezIV7NEk

Academy graduate Phil Foden has spent his entire career at City, joining the club aged four. With 31 senior England caps already, the 23-year-old is only now coming into his prime. With his peak still before him, Foden’s potential marks him as one of the hottest young talents in the game.
His value is estimated by Transfermarkt at £95 million, but many sources put it well above this figure. This makes Foden one of football’s most valuable players, along with teammate Erling Haaland.
How Much Is Erling Haaland Worth Compared To Luton’s Squad?
Arriving from Borussia Dortmund last summer for a cut price fee of £52 million, Haaland has dominated the Premier League. Last campaign, he scored a record 36 times, and already has 14 this season.
But since joining the Citizens, his value has skyrocketed even further. He reached 50 Premier League goals in just 48 games – another record – and continues to score freely.
Estimates of Haaland’s transfer value range drastically, but are listed somewhere from £150-£220 million. That makes the Norwegian somewhere between two and three times as valuable as the entire Luton squad.
Manchester City’s most expensive players are all worth far more than their Luton counterparts, but Haaland’s price tag could buy £8.5 million valued Carlton Morris around 20 times over. Should Luton win on Sunday, it would be a true giant killing by top flight standards.
